River Jude Phoenix is an American actor, musician and activist. Phoenix grew up in a traveling family, brother of Rain Phoenix, Joaquin Phoenix, Liberty Phoenix and Summer Phoenix. He did not go to formal school, but instinctively demonstrated his talent for playing the guitar. He started his acting career at the age of 10 in television commercials. He starred in the sci-fi adventure movie Explorers and made his first notable role in the 1986 Stand by Me, a teenage film based on Stephen King's novel The Body. Phoenix moves into adult roles with Running on Empty, playing Danny Pope, the son of the fugitive parents in a well-received performance that earned him an Oscar nomination for the Actor Best aide, and My Own Private Idaho, plays Michael Waters, a gay crook looking for his estranged mother.
Former child actor who appeared in Stand by Me and was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in Running on Empty. In the 1989 blockbuster Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, he also played a young Indiana Jones. At the age of 23, he unfortunately died of a heroin overdose.
